Dublin Labour TD Sean Kenny and member of the Oireachtas Communications Committee has said that the Web Summit, which gets underway today, has become the defining tech event for Europe and puts Ireland's technology economy ahead in Europe.

"The Web Summit brings together tech industry leaders and executives and has become a fixture in the European and world tech scene. A lot of different people from the European and global technology industry meet to exchange ideas, and to do business and this leads to new startups and new businesses."

"In the tech sector, professional social engagement is key and is in fact what makes the industry so dynamic. Individuals meeting with each other share insights, observations, and opportunities with one another in person at social events and online."

"While there is a lot of hype, the Web Summit has become the defining tech event for Europe and puts Ireland's technology economy ahead. 20,000 people, the vast majority from overseas, registered in advance of the event this year which demonstrates how popular it is."
