Dublin Bay North Labour TD and member of the Oireachtas Committee on Communications, Sean Kenny, has welcomed a significant milestone regarding Eircom's fibre rollout programme, which sees Eircom operating the largest fibre network in Ireland with a footprint reaching over 750,000 homes and businesses.

"Eircom has been increasing its planned national fibre footprint to just under one and a half million homes and businesses across Ireland and has been doing this since last November. Eircom also announced last week that it had become one of the first telecommunications companies in the world to use what is known as VDSL2 Vectoring technology in its Next Generation Fibre Access network, which will boost broadband speeds up to 100 Mbps, which is an impressive rate of speed."

"The result of all of this by July 2016, 70% of the country will have access to high speed fibre broadband, which will see high speed broadband become very widely available across the country. Eircom's fibre network is an open access network so any service provider can use the network to offer high speed broadband, which is great news for the economy as it ensures diversity and competition in the telecommunications sector. There are currently 15 operators using Eircom's network to deliver services to their own customers."

"Critically, Eircom's fibre rollout programme will bring speeds of up to 100Mbs to several different locations across the Dublin Bay North Constituency - Balgriffin, Belcamp, Clontarf, Coolock, Donaghmede and Sutton."
