Dublin Bay North Labour TD Sean Kenny today welcomed the publication by the Government of the Climate Action and Low-Carbon Development Bill.

"The Climate Action and Low-Carbon Development Bill is Ireland's answer to the ever growing global problem that is Climate Change. It is an essential part of Ireland's contribution to fighting damaging changes to the environment and in publishing it, the Government is delivering on a core commitment in the Programme for Government."

"The Heads of the Bill confirm Ireland's commitment to compliance with existing and future obligations of the State under EU and international law, but the Bill also looks to deal with the challenges of transitioning to a low-carbon future in Ireland. Our economy must be a low-carbon one so that it can deal with climate change, but not only that - it must also be able to ensure that Ireland becomes competitive in the area of green technology, so that Ireland can benefit from the green economy that is emerging across the world."

"I am very pleased to see that the Minister for Environment has taken into account the report published by Joint Committee on the Environment, Culture and the Gaeltacht, which was the location for a great deal of debate and argument on the matter of climate change and the nature of Ireland's response in dealing with it. There was also a comprehensive policy analysis reports from the National Economic and Social Council and from members of the general public also, and I was pleased to see these contributions taken into account."

"Ireland has made clear its commitment on an international level to an effective approach in terms of dealing with the challenge of climate protection and also the matter of sustainable food production. There is a great deal of further work to be done in this area over the coming years - this is not a short term project, but one that must take place over the long term, and take place in a consistent way. The new Climate Action and Low-Carbon Development Bill will help us to do this work in an effective way, and I look forward to supporting the Bill when it comes before Dáil Éireann."
