Labour TD and member of the Oireachtas Communications Committee, Sean Kenny, has said he is disappointed at the announcement by Dublin City Council that it will cease offering an email service on Dublin.ie from February 2014.

"Dublin.ie's email service was introduced in 2002 with the first version of the Dublin.ie web site. The intention was to provide a digital starting point for members of the public who were new to email and wished to establish a presence on a locally hosted website. Over the years, more than 30,000 accounts were created."

"Dublin City Council has acknowledged that the ceasing of this service will cause significant inconvenience to account holders but it is not a decision that has been taken lightly. At the present time there are approximately 2,500 active accounts and data indicates that users are moving to higher capacity services."

"I would make the following suggestions to users for moving to other services, which they will have to do by February 2014:

• Create a new account with Gmail, Outlook.com, Yahoo!, mail.com etc.
• Migrate your mail from dublin.ie to your new webmail account.
• Re-direct inbound email from your old Dublin.ie to your new email account.

"I would like to take this opportunity to pay tribute to Dublin City Council for hosting the Dublin.ie e-mail service."
