Dublin Bay North Labour TD and Member of the Oireachtas Transport Committee, Sean Kenny, has called for improved accident prevention measures on the Luas Network.

"oday there are reports of two separate incidents on the Luas Red Line. I would point out that I raised the issue of safety last year and I called for an improved system on the Luas Network in view of collisions on the Luas line."

"I said at the time and I say it again now, that it seems to me that stories of Luas services being stopped due to an accident are quite frequent. In particular I recall the Luas collision in 2009 with a bus in O'Connell Street/Abbey Street where the Luas was found to be at fault. The more serious of the two incidents this morning took place at this same location."

"Accidents like this, as well as causing harm to people, also mean that disruptions to public transport occur. One of the collisions this morning meant that for some time there was no Luas connection from Connolly Station to Heuston Station."

"here simply must be a way to prevent these kinds of accidents and I call on the RPA and the Minister for Transport, Leo Varadkar, to examine means of reducing collisions as a matter of urgency. This has to be dealt with before more people are seriously harmed."
