Dublin North East Labour TD Seán Kenny has said that he has received comments from constituents that made it clear that the public are extremely angry at former Taoiseach, Bertie Ahern's excessive expenses claims.

"It is quite clear that Mr. Ahern's expenses claims are far higher than the claims of other former Taoisigh. Constituents have contacted me to express that this sort of expense claim is very difficult indeed to understand when so many people throughout the country are having serious difficulties themselves.

"The Department of the Taoiseach has said that every aspect of spending, including the services for former Taoisigh, was under review as part of the comprehensive review of expenditure by the Government as it prepares for the Budget later this year.

"Former Taoisigh do have some duties that they are required to carry out after they leave office, including their role in the Council of State, which advises the President on the constitutionality of proposed legislation.

"I would call on the Government to reduce considerably the expenses of former Taoisigh and to ensure that expense claims are fully vouched - this will ensure transparency and also ensure that value for money is obtained".
