HSE SHOULD INVESTIGATE EQUIPMENT FAILURE - KENNY

Dublin North East Labour TD Seán Kenny has called on the HSE to ensure that mechanisms are put in place to ensure that there is a secondary power source available at all times in ambulances. This comes following the death of a patient as they were being transferred from one hospital to another in 2009.

"During the transfer, the heart-support machine stopped however there was no back-up power supply for the device. Following an inquest into the death, the Dublin city coroner has said he would contact the national ambulance authority about the issue of external power supplies.

"I would like to offer my sympathies to the family and I urge the HSE to not only investigate the circumstances surrounding the equipment failure but to also put measures in place so tragedies like this do not happen again in the future."
