Dublin Bay North Labour TD Sean Kenny has welcomed the news that the housing lists in Dublin City and Fingal are set to reduce by 21% and 23% respectively with the delivery of 4723 social housing units in total by the end of 2017.

"Overall, a total of €373,235,868 is to be invested in Dublin City and in Fingal from now until 2017 in enable it to increase the numbers of social housing units that can be acquired or built in the county. When the funding for the four Dublin councils is combined it comes to over €500 million until 2017."

"Dublin councils will also be assigned housing targets that are in excess of what they suggested in the initial stages of the social housing strategy. This means that each council can deliver housing units where the need for them is the most urgent. All of this is possible thanks to the massive €3.8bn social housing strategy budget that was announced by Minister Alan Kelly at the last Budget. Now we are seeing the benefits of that strategy starting to take hold at a local level."

"We have a serious housing problem in Dublin City and in Fingal but this Government is determined to tackle the crisis in a very direct way. I've been involved with the work being done by the Labour Parliamentary Party group on Housing and also with Dublin City and Fingal Labour councillors locally to ensure that the communities and local areas that I represent get their fair share of funding that will build houses for the people that need them. For example, in Coolock there will be 62 new builds going ahead at Bunratty and further projects will be announced in the coming weeks and months."

"On a national level, the announcement today will see over €1.5 billion - a massive amount of money, being invested in building, purchasing and property leasing by local government that will see 25% of those currently on the housing waiting being accommodated. The fact of the matter is that this Government is working extremely hard to tackle and resolve the housing crisis, and the news today demonstrates that."
