Dublin Bay North Labour TD Sean Kenny, a member of the Oireachtas Committee on Transport, has welcomed the news that disabled drivers and disabled passengers will not lose out in the transfer from the old excise relief scheme to the new fuel grant scheme.

"The Minister for Finance previously stated that a new fuel grant would be brought in to replace the excise relief scheme that has been operating for many years as part of the Disabled Drivers and Disabled Passengers Scheme. This change was made in accordance with a ruling by the Court of Justice of the European Union."

"Members of the scheme should now claim any outstanding excise relief due on fuel used to the end of 2014. From January 2015, members of the scheme will benefit from the new grant in respect of fuel used in 2015, which will be paid out in January 2016. The amount of relief given by the fuel grant will be the same as the relief available under the old excise relief scheme - there will be no change to this, which is in keeping with what members of the scheme were assured of previously."

"I am very pleased that this is indeed the case. Current members of the scheme do not need to reapply to receive the fuel grant, but they should continue to keep receipts on any qualifying fuel purchased under the scheme."
