Dublin Bay North Labour T.D. and member of the Oireachtas Transport Committee Sean Kenny today welcomed the announcement of public consultations that are being held to decide on a long term public transport strategy for the Northside of Dublin.

"I am particularly pleased that the DART link from Clongriffin is being looked at. I have supported this approach for a number of years at this stage and I am very pleased to see it being taken so seriously. A business case for the Clongriffin rail link was submitted by Irish Rail to the Minister for Transport, regarding this rail link back in 2011, and the option has been considered seriously since then."

"The Clongriffin rail link is being considered in two different guises, one being a DART link from Clongriffin to Dublin Airport and Swords, and the other option is a straightforward DART link from Clongriffin to the Airport only, and a Luas line running from Cabra to Swords. Both of these options would serve tourists, people in the communities along these routes, and also airport workers and those working in Swords. I think that either of them would be an excellent solution for the northeast side of Dublin City and Fingal as well."

"The Northside suburbs of Dublin, particularly on the borders of Dublin City and Fingal are some of the fastest growing areas in the country in terms of population. If we do not put the right public transport plans in place now, so that the long-term public transport needs of communities in this part of Dublin are met, it will mean increased traffic congestion in the future, as people will be unable to move around their communities properly, and also to move to and from the city centre - and this will ultimately hurt economic development into the future."

"With this in mind, I would urge people to make their views known, through the NTA, so that they can be considered as we move to putting viable public transport plans in place for the Northside of Dublin. A very comprehensive exercise has been carried out that examines a wide array of transport projects that are feasible in terms of money and in terms of time, and the best projects are now being evaluated. The objective is to find the project that best meets the needs on a value for money basis of such an important area of the Dublin region."
