Dublin Bay North Labour TD and member of the Oireachtas Transport Committee, Sean Kenny, has welcomed the news that the Government has approved publication of the Vehicle Clamping Bill.

"I am pleased to see that this piece of legislation is going forward. Up until now, clamping has been regulated on public roads but there is no regulation regarding clamping on privately held land. This legislation will be dealing with that gap in the law. The way clamping is regulated will be addressed in the legislation also, and that means the clamping industry will be accountable, something that is not the case at the moment.

"I have been contacted by many members of the public over the years expressing how concerned they are at the activity of some private clampers, and the extent to which this activity may be carried out in a less than fair manner and with little prospect of appeal against perceived abuses in many instances."

"In 2011, Minister for Transport Leo Varadkar asked the Oireachtas Committee on Transport to draw up the principles that should be contained within this Bill. The Committee responded on 28th March 2012 with a comprehensive report which contained a number of recommendations, the majority of which have been taken into account in drafting the Bill. I am pleased to have been a part of this work and am happy that it has led to legislation."
