Dublin Bay North Labour TD and member of the Oireachtas Committee on Justice, Sean Kenny, has deplored the upward trend of violent crime in the first weeks of 2014, and has called for the Minister for Justice, Alan Shatter, to meet with the Garda Commissioner to discuss how the trend is being dealt with.

"Last night's killing was the eighth violent death since the start of the year, the second in Tallaght and also the second fatal shooting of the year. We are just about three weeks into the New Year and I am very disturbed at the number of violent deaths in that time. Four of these killings have been in the Dublin area."

"Most of these crimes would appear to be related to gangs, domestic violence or violent disorder, and can be compared to violent deaths that have occurred in the past."

"What is shocking is the sudden spike upwards so early in 2014 and this needs to be stopped. I am calling on Minister Shatter to meet with the Garda Commissioner and to establish how An Garda Siochana are dealing with this deeply worrying trend in violent crime."
