Sean Kenny, the Dublin Bay North Labour Party TD and member of the Oireachtas Justice Committee, has welcomed the recent announcement that the size of the Garda Vetting Unit has been doubled.

"Garda Vetting is hugely important to those who are seeking to work with children and vulnerable people in our communities; in fact, they cannot do their jobs without this vetting process. I have seen cases where people have been unable to start work because their vetting application has not been progressed in a timely fashion, leading to fears
around not being able to start working in their position at all."

"It is for these reasons that I am very happy that the Department of Justice recently confirmed that a total of 41 extra staff have been redeployed to the Garda Vetting Unit over the last year and all of these individuals are now fully trained and deployed. I have also been made aware by Minister Brendan Howlin that a further 40 staff members have been sanctioned as part of the recent Budget, which means that the number of staff in the Garda Vetting Unit has been doubled beyond the point of the numbers based in it over the last two and a half years."

"This is an important development for those who work with children and those in society who are vulnerable, as care will be able to be provided by these workers who can now start the jobs that are waiting for them."
