Labour TD Sean Kenny has said it is deplorable that Bank of Ireland has raised its age requirements to avail of free banking services.

"Bank of Ireland has let loyal older customers down by making them wait until they are even older before being able to avail of free banking services.

"At present, Bank of Ireland customers aged 60 years of age can apply for a Golden Years account, which has no fees. The bank has said that from next February people will qualify for free banking only when they reach 66 years of age.

"I think that Bank of Ireland are using the changing of pension structures as an excuse to push through this change, which will cost older banking customers more and I agree entirely with the Consumers Association who have described what Bank of Ireland have done as cynical. This move by Bank of Ireland is about making money out of older people and nothing more."
