Labour TD Sean Kenny has warmly welcomed today's announcement that €32m has been allocated to local authorities which will provide more than 260 new homes for people with special housing needs.

"I am very pleased that my colleague, Minister for Housing and Planning, Jan O'Sullivan sanctioned this critical funding for social housing purposes. It is something I very much welcome because it will be targeted at families on the waiting list for housing, as well as at people with special needs. In my constituency of Dublin Bay North, as with many constituencies around the country, one of the major issues I have to constantly address is social housing. This funding will go some way towards addressing this particular issue."

"I welcome that €20m of the funding will enable local authorities to purchase 131 homes, purchases that will be completed this year and will address the specific special housing needs of families on waiting lists. The remaining €12.2m in funding - more than one-third of the total amount - will allow local authorities to acquire properties that will enable people with a disability to live independently."

"This funding is a positive, progressive move which shows that Labour Ministers are committed to delivering for people who are most in need in local communities the length and breadth of Ireland."
