Dublin Bay North Labour Party TD and member of the Oireachtas Committee on Transport has welcomed the new Smarter Travel Campus programme, which is being offered to third level institutions in Ireland.

"The Smarter Travel Campus programme is a free, voluntary package offered to Third Level Institutions engaged in a programme of mobility management. Benefits of engagement include reduced costs associated with parking as well as an enhanced 'green' profile, and more active travel by both students and staff."

"Resources available through Smarter Travel Campus include hands-on, site-specific advice from experienced facilitators, information on funding opportunities, student and employee travel survey and analysis of results, private group on carsharing.ie, access to Partner Seminars & networking events, inter-Partner walking/ cycling challenges, information and assistance with on-campus promotions. This new programme is being implemented by the National Transport Authority with funding from the Department of Transport, Tourism and Sport and builds on the success of the Smarter Travel Workplaces programme."

"More than 100 Partner workplaces are currently engaged, with an accumulated employee and student base of almost 250,000 people. For example, of 25 workplaces with established workplace travel plans, 76% reported a reduction in car driver trips. Of this surveyed group, an average reduction in car driver trips of 18% was reported, with 7 workplaces achieving more than a 20% reduction in car driver trips. Cycling also increased in the majority of workplaces that were surveyed, with an average increase of an astounding 156%. The Smarter Travel Workplaces programme has been a real success story, and I want to pay tribute to Minister Alan Kelly, the Minister of State for public transport matters, who I know has been working hard on this initative."

"The Smarter Travel Campus programme offers third level institutions this free, voluntary package which will assist with issues relating to access to, or movement through, third level campuses, through the promotion of walking, cycling, public transport and carsharing. A greater emphasis will be placed on the needs of students."
