Dublin Bay North Labour TD and member of the Oireachtas Committee on Justice Seán Kenny, has welcomed the report by RTE that the chairman of the loyalist group planning to protest in Dublin city centre on Saturday has said the protest will not go ahead as scheduled.

"I understand that the protest has been put on hold following contact with Gardaí. I welcome this as I would be quite concerned that the protest would lead to unrest along the lines of what happened in 2005 when loyalists last came down to protest."

"While I respect the right of people to protest, it is also important to have regard for the citizens of Dublin and the risk of civil unrest that might affect them. People might also have stayed away from the city centre for the day if the protest was taking place due to fear of civil unrest and that would hurt city businesses."
