Dublin Bay North Labour Party T.D., Sean Kenny, today highlighted the lack of amendments put forward by Sinn Féin on the Personal Insolvency Bill.

"Amazingly, Sinn Féin did not put forward a single amendment to the Personal Insolvency Bill, which surprised me, given the posturing that Sinn Féin representatives like to make. It is a poor reflection on how seriously Sinn Féin takes the matter of providing serious opposition, instead choosing to focus on populism and soundbites.

"The job of the opposition has to be about more than shouting across the Chamber of the Dáil, or going on the television or radio shows to make populist comments. The opposition have to provide meaningful alternatives, and struggling homeowners deserve more than Sinn Féin's lack of action on the insolvency issue.

"As a legislator that is supporting the Government, I expect to have substantive opposition from those who claim to be the opposition - it's in the best interest of democracy to have it. I expect they will complain about the Bill at some point in the near future and claim to be opposing it, but it is hard to see how Sinn Féin can be seen by the Irish people as credible opposition, if they can't be bothered to oppose serious legislation that is put forward by the Government by putting down amendments to change that legislation."
