Seán Kenny, the Dublin Bay North Labour TD, and member of the Oireachtas Committee on Justice, today welcomed the announcement of a €3m additional investment in the Garda fleet.

"I warmly welcome the announcement that funding of €3 million is being made available for Garda transport funding, with 170 new vehicles being purchased. This is a substantial investment in Garda transport, particularly at a time of severe budgetary constraints.

"I understand that the Garda Commissioner will be responsible for the actual provision of the new vehicles, and the Garda authorities are making arrangements to have them delivered and commissioned in December and January. While the main body of the order relates to patrol vehicles, it includes a limited number of unmarked cars and some vans.

"Despite the difficult economic conditions, it is important to support An Garda Síochána, to the greatest extent possible, in the vital work that they do. I am certain that the delivery and commissioning of 170 new vehicles will enhance the capacity of An Garda Síochána to provide an effective and efficient policing service to communities throughout the country. To date in 2012, 42 new vehicles have been commissioned. The 170 new vehicles will bring to 212 the number commissioned this year."
