Dublin North East Labour TD and Oireachtas Transport Committee member Sean Kenny said today that he encouraged everyone to get involved in the wide range of events taking place this week across the country during National Bike Week 2012, which takes place nationwide from 16-24 June this year.

"Bike Week is Ireland's biggest event to celebrate cycling and the benefits of cycling. Not only will cycling benefit your pocket, it also has positive benefits for your health and on traffic congestion. This week is all about getting people on their bikes and there are a range of imaginative events to appeal to everyone right across Ireland this week. As a keen cyclist myself, I hope people of all ages will join in.

"Details of all these events in every county are available on a dedicated website - www.bikeweek.ie which, among other things, contains information on individual bike week events as details become available, tips, including an instructional video on maintaining your bike as well as advice on how to promote cycling in the workplace and in schools.

"This Wednesday 20 June is National Bike to Work and Cycle to School Day where thousands of commuters and students will join together to celebrate Bike Week. I hope that this year, National Bike Week 2012 will be the biggest and most successful yet."
