The Labour Party TD for Dublin North East, Seán Kenny, has criticised the plans by Vodafone to send 130 jobs out of Ireland.

Deputy Kenny has been informed by the Communications Workers Union that Vodafone plans to end its contract with Rigney Dolphin, its customer care call-centre provider, which will see over jobs in Dublin and elsewhere axed and moved to India. 30 more jobs within Vodafone in the customer care area are also to go and be replaced by workers in Egypt.

While workers directly employed by Vodafone will have the opportunity to redeploy or to take redundancy packages, these terms will not be offered to affected workers employed through Rigney Dolphin.

"Vodafone has been massively profitable in Ireland since it entered the Irish telecoms market, extracting over €120 million in profits from its Irish operations last year", Deputy Kenny said.

"When over 400,000 people are unemployed and ordinary workers and businesses are struggling to keep their heads above water, Vodafone's plan is nothing short of insensitive", Deputy Kenny continued.

Deputy Kenny concluded by saying : "I would ask Vodafone to reconsider their plans. Ireland has been very good to Vodafone and it is not good enough that it now seeks to add to the unemployment crisis by making people redundant."
