Deputy Seán Kenny pointed out that the approach taken by the Irish Hotels Federation to the Duffy Walsh report is wrong. Deputy Kenny said that it was clear that the JLC system was in need of review.

"The Programme for Government makes a firm commitment to review the JLCs", he said. "The first step of that reform is to consider the Duffy Walsh report. Abolition is not a part of the solution, and the Irish Hotels Federation are wrong to seek it".

Deputy Kenny went on to say that the JLC's played an important role in the protection of some of the lowest paid workers in the economy and that these workers were still among the lowest paid despite the payment of Sunday premium rates.

"Cuts to their pay will do nothing except to disincentivise work, which could result in yet more people being driven onto the dole, thereby decreasing the Irish workforce further, and creating an additional burden on the State, which should be avoided at all costs."
